Your City on the Bay
Beautifully nestled at the mouth of the Menominee River as it enters the picturesque waters of Green Bay, Marinette is an inviting, friendly "hometown" of just under 12,000 people. The Menominee River separates Marinette from the upper peninsula of Michigan. Approximately 14 miles across the bay from Door County, Marinette is a wonderful destination for curious boaters looking for a day's adventure. The first recorded inhabitants of the Menominee River Basin were a small Algonquin Tribe known as "the wild rice people" because of the huge fields of wild rice. Named for the Native American wife of a well-known fur trader, Marinette became a center for fur traders, sawmills, and lumber companies in the mid-1800s. Queen Marinette, as she was known, was a wellrespected business woman of that time. Marinette attained city status in 1887, and its downtown commercial center reflects the architectural charm and grace of the city's boom years of 1880 to 1910. Today, Marinette enjoys a diverse and exciting shoreline that includes recreational and commercial operations. Fishing, boating, shipbuilding, paper making and other operations share their love of our beautiful waterways, and there is always something exciting to see and do in Your City on the Bay!
